How to use a recycle symbol
The recycle loop symbol indicates when or where an object can be recycled. (recycle image by Byron Moore from

A recycle symbol is used to show whether an object can be recycled, as well as areas where the object should be recycled. You can find the recycle symbol on the bottom or the side of plastic and paper products, along with some aluminium, wood and liquid products. You should always use the recycling symbol to know if a product can be recycled so that resources can be used a number of times rather than just once.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Check to see if a product you have or are going to manufacture is a material that can be recycled. If it is, use the symbol as a reference that shows it can be taken to a recycling centre.

  2. 2

Create a bin in your home or workplace with a recycle symbol on it to indicate that it should be used to keep products that can be taken to a recycling centre. This will help others know where to put objects that have a recycle symbol on them.

  3. 3

Take the materials that you have collected to a larger bin or centre that displays a recycle symbol. Make sure to separate the items according to directions for where to place different types of reusable materials.

Tips and warnings

  • You can also place the recycle symbol on clothing and pins as a symbol to help spread awareness about recycling.
