From history to fantasy, the cloak has a place in time as a multifunctional piece of clothing. It shields its wearer from the elements while providing a measure of anonymity at the same time. A cloak is essentially a large piece of fabric, held in place under the neck with a clasp. While there are many decorative clasps available, the simplest is a basic frog clasp. This style of clasp consists of a loop on one end and a knot on the other that are hooked together to keep the cloak closed.
- Skill level:
Things you need
- 2 safety pins
- Heavy cord
- Heavy-duty thread
- Sewing needle
Put on the cloak to help determine where you want the clasp to be located. It should be below your chin, giving you a comfortable amount of room to turn your head as well as look up and down.
Put a safety pin in each side of the cloak at the desired clasp location to make it easy to find later.
Select a heavy cord that matches the material of which your cloak is made. If in doubt, a simple flat black goes with most fabrics.
Cut a piece of cord 18 inches long.
Tie several knots in the middle of the cord, one on top of another, to form a ball of cord the size of your index finger knuckle. It should have at least three inches of cord extending from either end.
Bundle the two ends of the cord sticking out of the knot and sew them together.
Cut a piece of cord 12 inches long.
Loop the cord in the centre and hook it over the knot. Determine how large the loop must be to easily come on and off the knot. However, don't make it so large that the clasp will fall apart.
Sew the excess cord on the loop's two ends together to keep the loop in place.
Sew the knot side of the clasp to one side of the cloak and the loop side to the other using the safety pins to determine placement.
