How to Install a Unistrut Nut

Updated February 21, 2017

Unistrut systems use channels set to precise dimensions. Hardware designed to work with the channel allows you to create complex hangers and racks with less fabrication than steel angles and beams. Unistrut nuts lock in the rolled edge located at the top of the channel. The shape of the nut allows it to turn in one direction. Correct installation of Unistrut nuts ensures the connection between the Unistrut and the hardware threaded into the nut does not fail.

Set a Unistrut nut into the open side of a Unistrut channel with the spring located on the bottom of the nut facing the solid or slotted side of the channel. Turn the nut lengthwise for it to fit between the sides of the channel.

Insert the tip of a flathead screwdriver in the threaded opening in the centre of the nut.

Push down on the screwdriver. Turn the handle of the screwdriver clockwise until the nut clips into place. Pull the screwdriver tip out of the threaded hole.

Align the centre hole of a Unistrut washer with the threaded hole of the nut.

Slide the threaded end of a bolt in the washer hole. Turn the bolt clockwise to thread it in the threaded hole of the Unistrut nut.

Push down on a Unistrut nut before moving it along a Unistrut channel to avoid damaging the nut spring.
