How to Reset the Oil Service Light on a 318I BMW

Updated February 21, 2017

Some models of the BMW 318i are equipped with an engine oil life system that illuminates a reminder on the instrument panel when it is time to change the oil. After the oil service has been completed, the light should be reset. Most BMW repair technicians will reset the light if they change the oil. Otherwise, you can reset it yourself. Resetting the light lets the system accurately track the correct interval until the next service is due.

Turn the ignition key to "OFF."

Press and hold the trip reset button to the left of the odometer.

Turn the ignition switch to "ON" without starting the engine.

Release the reset button when "RESET" appears on the display.

Press and hold the trip meter reset button until "RESET" flashes on and off.

Press and release the tip meter reset button. The oil service light resets.
