Take your old newspaper and recycle it into something that can be used in your house. By making baskets out of woven newspaper, you can create several different sizes, styles and types of baskets. Paint the baskets so they match your decor. With just a few items and some patience, you can use that newspaper for something other than filling up the recycling bin. With some supervision, children can take part in the activity.

Take regular-sized newspaper pieces and cut the pieces in half along the folded edge. Fold these pages in half lengthwise and cut along the fold.
Fold the pieces of newspaper in half, three times until you have about 3/4-inch wide strips. You can adjust this how your see fit, but you want all the strips to be the same width for continuity throughout the basket.
Place one piece of folded newspaper on a flat surface, horizontally. Place another strip over the first strip, vertically. This will form a cross shape. Adjust this piece so it forms an even 90-degree angle and so that all four ends of the newspaper pieces measure about the same, lengthwise. Once you believe it's even, place glue where these two pieces intersect.
Take one more strip of newspaper and place it under the vertical strip so that it's parallel with the
horizontal strip. Push this strip down until it's flush and its ends are even with the first horizontal strip. Place a bit of glue where this strip and the vertical strip intersect. Repeat this with a strip on the opposite side.
Take another strip of newspaper and weave it through the horizontal pieces, until it's flush with the first vertical piece. Glue the spots where the strips intersect. Repeat this step on the other side of the first vertical strip.
Continue to weave the pieces of newspaper strips until you have created a large enough bottom for the project. Remember, to leave some of the newspaper strips exposed so you can continue to make the sides of the basket.
Fold the exposed newspaper strips up, so they form roughly a 90-degree angle.
Begin weaving newspaper strips through the sides of the baskets. Don't end a weave on a corner, but try to end a weave so the end of the strip is hidden under a piece of newspaper. Secure with glue where necessary. Cut newspaper strips where necessary to make them fit along the sides of the basket.
Even out the ends of the strips that are exposed when you can't weave any more strips through. Then, take another strip of newspaper and open it so it forms an upside down "V" shape. Place this over the strip ends to hide them and finish it off. Glue it to the ends of the basket.
Paint the basket with craft paint. Decorate it with embellishments by gluing them to the basket. Paint a sealer like Mod Podge on the basket to seal it.
