Door knobs are simple devices that allow a door to close and latch securely. Different types of door knobs exist. One of the most common types of door knobs are ones that have an actual round or oval knob that you turn to withdraw the latch from the strike plate. The door can then be pushed or pulled open depending on its orientation. You will quickly notice that if you do not rotate the door knob sufficiently, it will not open.

  1. 1

Check your hands to make sure that they are dry. If not, dry them with a towel. Door knobs are made of metal and any moisture on your hands will cause you to not be able to get a firm grip on it.

  2. 2

Grasp the door knob with either hand. Using your dominant hand works best.

  3. 3

Turn the door knob a quarter turn in either direction. At around a quarter turn you will notice that you cannot turn the knob any further. The latch is now fully withdrawn into the door knob assembly.

  4. 4

Push or pull the door to open it (depends on door orientation). Slowly release pressure on the door knob to allow it to rotate back to its resting position.

Tips and warnings

  • If you have young kids, consider installing safety devices for your door knobs. These prevent the child from easily opening the door.
