Hashimoto's thyroiditis, also known as chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, is an autoimmune disease that most commonly strikes women between the ages of 45 and 65. It is fifty per cent more prevalent in women than in men. Hashimoto's thyroiditis causes the antibodies of the body to attack the body's own thyroid, breaking down its function and gradually destroying it. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is the most common cause of thyroid disease in the United States.
