Many Garmin products support the installation of multiple maps onto a single unit. These maps can be shown or hidden depending on the current context. You might have a topographic map, a driving map and a golfing map all of the same area. To find out what maps are available for your device, click on the link in the Resources section. Garmin's MapSource software allows you to unlock Garmin maps and transfer them to and from your GPS device.

Instructions

Installing Maps Included With Your GPS Device

  1. 1

Insert the DVD included with your GPS device into your computer and follow the on-screen instructions to install the maps to your computer. Allow the program to install a shortcut to your desktop. The installer will also install Garmin MapSource.

  2. 2

Connect your GPS device to the computer with the included USB cable.

  3. 3

Open Garmin MapSource using the shortcut on your computer's desktop. When the program opens, it will prompt you to unlock your maps.

  4. 4

Select the "Unlock Regions" tab and click "Add" to enter an unlock code. These are 25-character codes printed on yellow sheets of paper or the packaging that your device came in. Type in a code and click "OK." Repeat as necessary for all of your unlock codes.

  5. 5

Click on "Send to Device" in the "Transfer" menu. Check the boxes next to the names of the maps that you want to install on your device. Click "Send." Close MapSource and disconnect your GPS device from your computer.

Installing Maps From the Garmin Store

  1. 1

Purchase maps from the Garmin map store in the Resources section if you need maps that did not come with your device. You can have your map delivered via download, DVD or SD card.

  2. 2

Install the maps onto your computer. The installer will also install Garmin MapSource.

  3. 3

Plug your GPS device into the computer with the included GPS cable.

  4. 4

Open Garmin MapSource. When the program loads, it will prompt you to unlock your maps.

  5. 5

Select a map product from the list and click "Unlock Online" to unlock maps purchased separately from your GPS device. Your web browser will open and prompt you to install a Garmin plug-in. Allow it to install this plug-in.

  6. 6

Click "Find Devices" and select your device. Type in the serial number printed on your device.

  7. 7

Enter the eight-digit coupon code from the certificate that was included with your map purchase. Click "Unlock Maps." Close your browser and Map Source. Disconnect your GPS device from your computer.
