How to use cola to clear drains

Updated April 17, 2017

Clogged drains can occur both in the kitchen and bathroom. In order to return the drain to working condition, the blockage needs to be removed. Instead of using a harsh chemical drain cleaner, cola can be used to dissolve and break down the gunk blocking your drains. The carbonation helps to release and remove the blockage safely and effectively.

Remove any visible debris from your drain using your tweezers. You may be able to see hair or food particles blocking the pipe. Remove these.

Scrub the drain entrance to remove any dirt, food or hair that may be around the drain. You don't want to wash more material down the drain during the unclogging process.

Open the large bottle of cola.

Pour directly into the drain, slowly and carefully. It will bubble and fizz so try to reduce overflow by pouring a slow, steady stream.

Pause if the cola is fizzing too much, and allow the bubbles to die down before beginning to pour again. Pour the entire bottle down the drain.

Allow the cola to remain in the drain overnight. Avoid using the drain while the cola is at work.

Rinse the cola from the drain by allowing warm water to run for about five minutes. The drain should be opened and draining well.

Things You'll Need
