Airbags are designed to save lives and prevent serious injuries if you are involved in a crash or collision. If you have been in an accident in your PT Cruiser, your airbags may have deployed. There are sensors in your PT Cruiser that inflate the airbags when your vehicle is hit hard enough on the front end. Once the airbags have been inflated, you must replace them with new ones to help ensure your safety in case of a future accident. Replacing the airbags in your PT Cruiser is a bit involved, but you should be able to do the job yourself.

  1. 1

Lift the bonnet of your PT Cruiser and prop it open. Detach the negative cable from the battery. The new airbags could deploy after installation if the negative battery cable is not disconnected.

  2. 2

Remove the airbag fuses to deactivate the airbags. The fuse box is located in the engine compartment, next to the air cleaner in your PT Cruiser.

  3. 3

Detach the screws securing the panels of the steering column to remove the panels and gain access to the airbag bolts. Remove the airbag bolts from the back of the steering wheel, using a wrench. Pull out the old airbag until you see the wires. Unhook the wires from the steering wheel.

  4. 4

Plug in the wires of the new airbag and bolt it back on from behind the wheel. Reattach the steering column panels and screw them back together.

  5. 5

Unscrew the hinges to the glove box to remove it and access the passenger-side airbag. Unbolt the airbag and unplug its wires. Remove the airbag. Attach the wires to the new airbag and bolt it carefully in place. Reattach and secure the glove box with its screws and close it.

  6. 6

Reinsert the airbag fuses in the correct slots in the fuse box. Reconnect and secure the negative cable to the battery.

Tips and warnings

  • The computer of your PT Cruiser will need to be reset after you replace the airbags. This can be done by the dealer or an auto mechanic. If the computer is not reset, the new airbags may not deploy in the case of an accident.
