How to Wire Your Surveillance Camera to Record on a VCR From a TV

Updated February 21, 2017

Most surveillance cameras are connected directly to a television system. This allows you to view everything taking place on the camera, but it does not record the video content, which prevents you from being able to use the footage later. It is possible to connect a VCR to a television and set up recording of your surveillance video content.

Insert the coaxial cable running from the rear of the surveillance camera into the "In" port on the back of the VCR.

Plug one end of RCA audio/video cables into the "Video Out" ports on the television set.

Plug the other ends of the RCA cables into the "Video In" ports on the VCR.

Power on the television and VCR. Press "Video" on the TV. The surveillance footage appears on the screen.

Insert the blank VHS tape into the VCR, then push "Play" and "Record" to start the recording process.

Things You'll Need

  • RCA audio/video cables
