In the tribal style belly dancing costumes, there are two commonly seen tops: the choli top and the coin bra. You can make your own coin bra with a little patience and a varying amount of sewing, depending on the bra you've selected and whether you wish to cover it first or change out the straps. For the simplest coin bra, start with a basic black bra that is very sturdy in design and use the existing straps.
- Skill level:
Things you need
- Black bra
- Floral ribbon wire mesh
- Black spray paint (optional)
- Jump rings
- Needle-nose pliers
Buy a sturdy black bra. Select one that has an underwire and has padded support with firm cups. If your bra is constructed with flimsy fabric, you'll need to line the inside with buckram or very stiff interfacing to give it support for the coins. If the bra isn't black, you'll need to cover the bra and straps with black fabric. Using the existing straps is easiest; however, if you want a halter style, see step 2. Otherwise, skip to step 3.
(Optional) Cut off the straps. Sew on new, black fabric straps that can be tied at the neck for a halter-style bra.
Cut a length of floral ribbon wire mesh to fit the size of your bra cup. You'll use this to hang your coins.
(Optional) Spray paint the wire mesh black and let it dry.
Sew the wire mesh ribbon onto the bra cups. Sew on as many bands of mesh as you want, depending on how much of the bra cup you wish to cover with coins. You can have a single band along the lower edge of the bra cup or you can cover the entire cup with bands of mesh.
Thread a jump ring onto a coin, then thread it through the wire mesh on the bra cup. Close the jump ring using the needle-nose pliers. This hangs one coin.
Repeat the process, hanging coins until they cover the mesh. Hang them as close together as you desire. Closer will make the coins hang more densely, and they'll make more noise. Note: The bra will also be heavier, so make sure the cups are sturdy or reinforced.
