If a storage drive is internal, it is screwed securely onto the inside of your computer's case and plugged directly into your motherboard via a special type of cable. If your storage drive is external (like the Maxtor N256), it connects to the outside of your computer via a data transfer cable that uses either USB or FireWire technology. Both types of drives open the same way, but you'll have to first connect the Maxtor N256 to your computer in order to use it.

Choose between using USB or FireWire cables to connect your Maxtor hard drive to your computer. FireWire will provide faster data transfer speeds, but your computer may not necessarily have a FireWire input. USB will provide slower data transfer speeds, but all computers have USB inputs. Also, the Maxtor hard drive comes with a USB cable. If you want to use FireWire, you will have to go out and purchase a cable.
Connect your Maxtor hard drive to your computer using the cable you have selected. One end goes into the appropriate computer input (either FireWire or USB, depending on the cable), and the other end goes into the appropriate output on the hard drive.
Double-click the Maxtor N256 external storage drive icon in this window to open its contents on your computer.
