Compaq laptop batteries need occasional maintenance to continue working properly in the PC. When you charge and drain the laptop repeatedly in a short time frame, the rechargeable battery might cause the power meter to display the wrong charge level percentage. This incorrect power reading could cause an inconvenience when you use the laptop for a long stretch, such as a PowerPoint presentation, but it unexpectedly loses power midway. Hewlett-Packard recommends that Compaq users fully charge and discharge the battery to format or "calibrate" it to yield correct power levels.
