How to Start a Dressmaking Class or Business

Starting a dressmaking class and business could prove to be lucrative if you already have the necessary sewing skills. A dressmaking business can be run from your home, saving you money on overhead costs.

Assess your dressmaking skills. You must have excellent tailoring skills before considering a business teaching dressmaking to your clients. If you find that you need to brush up on your sewing skills you could take classes at a local fabric shop or local college.

Decide on your dressmaking niche. Narrow down the type of dresses you will make or teach others to make. Will your class focus on wedding gowns or will you make working attire or ball gowns?

Update your dressmaking equipment before you open your doors for business. If you are making dresses, your sewing machine should be industrial quality to allow for large orders. Teaching a class on dressmaking will require that you have enough sewing machines for your students.

Obtain a license for your business. Most states require a license to operate any business. Go to your website to register your business. While there, research the requirements for operating a business from your home.

Choose your location. As previously noted, running a dressmaking business from your home would save on overhead costs. However, you need to be sure you have enough space to work and teach your classes. The area would need to be large enough to accommodate your students and several stand-alone sewing machines. Renting a small office space--although more expensive--would provide the necessary space and allow you to maintain the privacy of your home.

Advertise your dressmaking classes and services at your local fabric shops and cleaners. You could also advertise in local newspapers. Screen a few of these publications for their "how to advertise information." Also look online for websites that cater to your area. Sites like offer free advertising for classes and services.
