A .mcg file is a karaoke music file containing both graphics and audio (lyrics and music). MP3+G is another format for saving karaoke music but stores song audio (as an .mp3 file) in a separate file from the song lyrics (as a .cdg file). The .mcg file is a file format proprietary to CAVS USA and can be uncompressed only by using CAVS software. However, after it is uncompressed, there are a variety of software applications that can convert the file to an MP3+G format.
- Skill level:
Uncompress the .mcg file using CAVS Decoder (see the resources section) to convert the .mcg files to CDG format and separate the .cdg lyrics from the .mp3 audio. The application is compatible with Windows operating systems, including Windows 7.
Convert the resulting CDG format files to MP3+G format using one of these software programs:
Use TriceraSoft CDG Ripper (as a free trial; see the resources section. In addition to converting the CDG format to the MP3+G format, this program can repair disk errors, rename tracks and find lyrics using the Internet.)
Use MP3+G Toolz (for free; see resources). This Windows program requires DirectX 9.0 or later to support file playback. It also can fix file names by correcting capitalisation and removing underscores.
Use CAVS Encoder (not free; see resources). This program allows you to select the conversion speed and rate and to change the lyric sync timing to make sure the lyric graphics are in time to the music.
Open the resulting MP3+G karaoke files with your karaoke player.
