Games downloaded online via torrents include many older "abandonware" and "freeware" titles. Torrents are a mixed bag, however, ranging from simple games requiring almost no set-up to those which must be burnt to a disc first and then installed. Most computers at least have image burning software pre-installed, unless the computer was a custom build. Good image burning software is also available for free download online. For users without a disc burning drive or an unused writable disc laying around, virtual drive software is also available for free download, allowing you to run games as if they were already on a disc.
- Skill level:
Download the torrent file. Open it with the torrent application of your choice to begin downloading. Good torrent programs include BitTorrent, uTorrent, and TorrentStorm. Wait for the torrent to finish downloading before attempting to open any of the downloaded files.
Right-click the finished torrent file in your torrent program and choose to open the file in its containing folder. Look for a "setup" file and double-click to begin installation. Follow all the prompts given by the set-up file. If the torrent downloaded a file ending in ".iso," then you have an image file that must either be burnt to a disc or mounted on a virtual drive.
Check your computer's list of applications for Roxio, Nero or a similar disc-burning program. Many computers come pre-loaded with either Roxio or Nero, which both burn image files. Download a program like BurnISO, MagicISO or ImgBurn if you do not already have image writing software installed. To burn the image file, open it using your disc writing software. Insert a writable disc and start the image burn. When finished, open the disc drive's folder to view its files. Find the set-up file and double-click to begin setting up the game.
Download and install a virtual drive application if you wish to virtually mount a drive for the game. Good programs to use include Daemon Tools, PowerISO, or MagicISO. Install the virtual drive program and set it up with at least one virtual drive. Select your image file to mount and either drag and drop it into the virtual drive or select to open it with a virtual drive. Open up the virtual drive's folder on your computer and find the set-up file. Double-click to open and run the game's installation. If you can, choose a complete or full installation so you will no longer need to mount the virtual drive just to play the game.
Tips and warnings
- The best discs for writing image files to are simple read and write-only discs. Re-writable discs often do not work.
- Never download torrent files or games without antivirus software already running on your computer. These files, and even the websites offering links to them, are known for containing viruses.
