Locked PDF documents can be confusing. Even if you know the password, it may be difficult to figure out where to enter it or how to print the document. There is a common reason for this: the popular Adobe Reader does not support unlocking encrypted PDF files. Instead, you need the more powerful Adobe Acrobat. With this program, printing a locked PDF is simple.

    Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat. Adobe invented the PDF and created PDF password encryption.

    Click the "Secure" button in the top menu.

    Choose "Remove Security."

    Enter the password and click "OK."

    Click the printer icon near the top of the window.

    Click "Print."

Tips and warnings

  • All this assumes you know the file's password. In addition to being extremely difficult, hacking into a locked PDF is often illegal.
