Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on a Mac may help in troubleshooting a number of issues including fan management, power and battery issues, lighting problems and video problems. An SMC reset should only be attempted after other troubleshooting techniques fail, according to Apple. Resetting the SMC on an iMac differs from resetting the SMC on other Mac computers.

    Go to the “Apple” menu and select “Shut Down.” Confirm you want to shut down the computer.
