Google Chrome is a Web browser available for Windows, Mac and Linux. It is designed to help users surf the Internet securely. One of the ways Chrome does this is allowing you to hide your IP address so websites you visit cannot record the IP address for your actual machine. It helps keep the information for your machine away from people who could use it to steal information. Hiding your IP address can also help you get past various filters.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Call your Internet service provider to find out your actual IP address. You can also use the service at WhatIsMyIPAddress website. ProxyBox is another website that also shows you your IP address on their Web page, as is WhatIsMyIP. The information is also available on the administrative page for your router.

  2. 2

Find a proxy server. SamAir Security, Public Proxy Servers and RosInstrument provide lists of free proxy servers you can choose from, or you can search for your own.

  3. 3

Launch Google Chrome. How you do this may differ depending on your operating system.

  4. 4

Go to the "Tools" menu and click on "Options." Click on the tab that says "Under The Hood" and push the "Change proxy settings" button. This brings up the Internet Options window.

  5. 5

Click on the "Connections" tab and then the "LAN Settings" button. In the window that comes up, check the box that says "Use a proxy server for your LAN." Fill in the "Address" and "Port" fields with the proxy from the list. The proxies are listed as "Address: Port." For example, with a proxy listed as "" "" would be the address and "80" would be the port.

  6. 6

Click on "OK." Chrome is now configured to let you browse the Web anonymously. You can go back to WhatIsMyIPAddress or any other similar website and see the IP address everyone else sees when you browse.

Tips and warnings

  • There are also several software solutions that set your proxy for you and hide your IP address by turning them on. Three examples are: Easy Hide IP, Hide IP NG and Not My IP.
