Jewellery makers achieve an entirely unique piece of art by painting jewellery in their own innovative designs. Whether for personal use or commercial sale, the process of painting metal jewellery remains the same. Traditional steps and procedures allow your imagination to take shape and be preserved in a wearable art form.
Degrease the metal jewellery to remove oils. Mix dish soap and warm water in a basin. Allow the jewellery to sit in the solution for a few minutes, then scrub with a brush. Pat dry.
Use a small paintbrush to apply strippable coating to any part of the jewellery that you want to protect from being painted. Allow the coating to dry.
Apply a base coat of acrylic with the sponge-applicator paint bottle. Add texture and design by overlaying a different colour using a paintbrush, achieving a mottled or tie-dye effect. When the paint is dry, remove the strippable coating.
Cover the entire piece of jewellery with the clear acrylic matt spray. Spray the jewellery from 6 inches away on the front and back. Allow it to dry for several hours.
Use a disposable container to mix one part resin to one part hardener to avoid bubbles. Use a sponge applicator to gently spread the resin mixture onto the jewellery surface. Pop any bubbles with a pin and reapply the resin to achieve a smooth surface. Allow to dry several hours before touching.
Always spray the matt finish in a well-ventilated area. Apply resin in a 71- to 72-degree environment to allow it to set properly. Use the resin mixture immediately after combining it with the hardener to avoid an undesired consistency.
