Almost anyone can build a custom barbecue grill easily and inexpensively. With only a couple materials, such as two large terra cotta pots, you can build a barbecue grill that is portable and easy to store, unlike the large and bulky barbecues. Always remember to use your barbecue grill at least 10 feet away from the house or any trees and on a non-flammable surface such as concrete to prevent any hazardous accidents.
- Skill level:
Things you need
- 2 large terra cotta pots
- Ready-light charcoal
- Circular grill grate
- Oven gloves
Place the saucer from the terra cotta pot on the ground where you plan on building and using your barbecue grill, on a non-flammable surface.
Place one of the terra cotta pots on top of the saucer and pour roughly 0.227kg. of charcoal into the pot. Light the charcoal with a match and allow the charcoal to burn uncovered for 20 minutes. Even though ceramic terra cotta pots are non-flammable, they will get extremely hot, so it's best to use oven gloves when removing the lid or adding the grill grate to the barbecue.
Place the grill grate on top of the terra cotta pot once the fire has burnt down and the charcoal has turned a whitish colour. The grill grate should be a little bit larger than the terra cotta pot so that it will rest securely on top.
Arrange food on top of the grill grate and cover your new barbecue grill with the second terra cotta pot with the drainage hole of the pot on top, acting as the air vent of the barbecue.
Grill the food until it's done or to your liking.
