If you're planning on buying or selling a valuable piece of sports or entertainment memorabilia that has been autographed, you'll want to authenticate that autograph. The authentication process essentially proves the autograph is genuine. A verified autograph on your piece of memorabilia can greatly increase its value, while an autograph that proves false will severely decrease its worth.

Use PSA/DNA Autograph Authentication Experts. PSA/DNA is an organisation staffed by experts in the field of autograph authentication. You can have your memorabilia item or items shipped to the PSA/DNA organisation, where experts will go over it and authenticate the autograph, then ship it back to you.
Talk to the clerks at your local memorabilia shop. Hobby shops that sell items like sports memorabilia and comic books often have autographed items for sale. This means that, more than likely, they've dealt with autograph authentication companies. Simply speak with the clerks or the manager at your town's memorabilia shop and ask them what services they use. In addition, they'll most likely be able to tell you the benefits and drawbacks of a particular company.
Use your local phone book. If there is an autograph authentication company in your area, you can find it in your local phone book either by name (if you happen to know it) or by category. If you're looking to authenticate a comic book autograph, for example, you would look under "Comic Books." If you're looking to authenticate a sports autograph, you would look under "Sports Cards & Memorabilia." This will also give you a wide variety of options, as similar companies in your area will be listed on the same page.
Use Google 411 (see References). Google 411 is a free 411 information hot-line run by Google. You simply dial the number, say the business name or category (for example, if you don't know the name of a particular company you would just say "Autograph Authentication Services") along with the city and state in which you live. Google 411 will find a list of businesses that match your criteria, and even connect you to them via telephone at no charge.
