Electrical consumption is important information to have for any appliance or group of appliances within a home to help figure out the best way to conserve energy. Knowing how to calculate the electrical consumption of appliances is useful because many appliances provide only their required amperage and voltage, but utility companies measure electrical consumption in terms of kilowatt-hours. Consumers may find it helpful to understand how to convert voltage and amperage into kilowatt-hours to better understand their electric consumption options.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

  1. 1

Locate the electrical information panel on the appliance. This is a metal label that is physically stamped onto one side of the appliance. This label is required by law to be present on all electrical appliances.

  2. 2

Locate the required voltage and amperage on the electrical label.

  3. 3

Multiply the voltage by the amperage. This gives the wattage of the electrical device.

  4. 4

Divide the resulting product by 1000. This final result is the kilowatt usage of the device. Further, this is the kilowatt-hour electrical usage of the device for every hour the device is in use.
