How do I Attach Metal Fence Finials?

Fence finials are available in a variety of materials, including several different metals. Most finials, or fence post caps are designed to enhance the appearance of a fence while protecting the posts from weather damage. The caps for a metal fence such as a chain link fence are usually made of the same metal as the posts. Stainless steel, brass and copper finials are also made for protecting and decorating a wood fence.

  1. 1

Place the metal fence finials over the tops of the fence posts they will adorn. Hold the caps in place and mark the side screw holes with a pencil. Draw an "X" from corner to corner on the tops of wood fence posts that will be topped by finials. The finials have a screw attached to the bottom.

  2. 2

Drill the marked screw holes with a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the screw diameters. Use an appropriate metal drill bit for drilling into the sides of metal fence posts. Drill holes into the tops of posts at the intersection of the "X" mark to receive the screws on the bottoms the finials that will top them.

  3. 3

Spread a liberal amount of marine grade adhesive to the bottom of a metal finial that will go onto the top of a wood fence post.

  4. 4

Screw on the caps with bottom screws through the top holes at the "X" marks. Rotate the caps until they are tightened firmly and aligned with the tops of the posts.

  5. 5

Press firmly down on the metal caps that cover wood fence posts and secure from the overlapping sides. Hold the caps in place while tightening the side screws with a screw gun.

  6. 6

Place the caps for a chain link fence, or other metal fence on over the posts. Insert the attachment screws through the overlapping sides of the metal finials and secure them with a screw gun.
