How to Clean Black Plastic

Updated April 17, 2017

It's in your patio furniture, your child's toys, your daughter's dress-up jewellery, and your old set of plates from college. We are surrounded by plastic, and one of the reasons is that it's easy to clean. Black plastic is no exception. You can't bleach it, because that could cause discolouration, but there's a homemade, all-natural cleaning solution that gets the job done.

Mix 4 cups of warm water, 1 cup of white vinegar and 1 cup of lemon juice in the bucket.

Saturate the black plastic with the cleaning solution. If the item is small, this is best done over a sink. If the item is large, clean it outside.

Rub the plastic thoroughly with the sponge, dipping the sponge back into the cleaning mixture as needed. Repeat the process as needed until you are satisfied the black plastic is clean

Rinse the plastic item in cool, clean water and allow it to air-dry.

Pour any remaining cleaning solution down the drain.

If your item is large, double or triple the measurements to create a larger batch of cleaning solution.
