Instructions

    Converting with Microsoft Excel

  1. 1

Open Microsoft Excel by clicking on the program's icon on your computer's "Desktop" or by clicking "Start," "All Programs," "Microsoft Excel." If you don't have Microsoft Excel installed on your computer, complete the steps in the "Converting within OpenOffice" section of this article (the second section).

  2. 2

Click "File," "Open." Navigate to the directory or disk containing the WK4 file you want to convert to XLS. Double click on the file's name to start the conversion process.

  3. 3

Follow the on-screen prompts within the "Transition Formula Entry" dialogue box to convert any Lotus 1-2-3 formulas to Microsoft Excel's formula format or keep the formulas in the Lotus 1-2-3 format. The Transition Formula Entry utility will open automatically.

  4. 4

Click "OK" to close the Transition Formula Entry utility.

  5. 5

Click "File," "Save As." Click on the down arrow next to "Save as type." Select "Microsoft Excel Workbook" to change the WK4 format to XLS.

  6. 6

Enter a new name for the file, if desired, in the "File name:" box. Click "Save" to save the converted WK4 file.

    Converting with OpenOffice

  1. 1

Open your computer's internet browser. Click on the "OpenOffice" link in the Resources section of this article to download the free productivity suite.

  2. 2

Click on the "I want to download OpenOffice.org" link. Click on "Download now!" Click "Save As," "Save All" or "Save" when the "Opening Ooo_3.2...E_en-US.exe" dialogue box appears.

  3. 3

Navigate to the directory containing the downloaded file. Click on "Ooo_3.2...E_en-US.exe" to start the suite's installation process. You will be prompted when the suite is installed.

  4. 4

Open OpenOffice.org Calc by clicking on the program's icon on your computer's "Desktop" or by clicking "Start," "All Programs," "OpenOffice.org Calc."

  5. 5

Click "File," "Open." Navigate to the directory or disk containing the WK4 file you want to convert to XLS. Double click on the file's name to start the conversion process.

Note, Lotus 1-2-3 formulas will convert automatically, but Lotus 1-2-3 macros will not convert and will not work within OpenOffice Calc.

  6. 6

Click "File," "Save As." Click on the down arrow next to "Save as type." Select "Microsoft Excel (.xls)" to change the WK4 format to XLS.

  7. 7

Enter a new name for the file, if desired, in the "File name:" box. Click "Save" to save the converted WK4 file.

Tips and warnings

  • If your computer is running Microsoft Excel 5.0 or older, you will need to download and use the "ABC Amber Lotus 1-2-3 Converter 1.11" (see Resources) to convert a WK4 file to the XLS format.
  • Note, if the WK4 file contains macros, Excel 97 and later will not run the macros due to security issues built into Excel.
