# How to Calculate the Weight of a Steel Pipe

Steel pipes are one of the most common materials used in construction. The weight of a steel pipe varies depending on its size and thickness but regardless of these features you can still determine the weight of any such pipe by using a mathematical formula. Being able to calculate the weight of a steel pipe through the use of this formula will save you lots of time and money trying to figure out the pipe's weight through the use of other methods.

## Instructions

1. 1

Gather the necessary information. You will need to know the outside diameter of the pipe. This is the distance of a straight line that runs through the centre of the pipe and connects two points on the pipe's surface. You will also need to know the wall thickness of the pipe. Both of these measurements should be taken in inches. The final thing that you will need to know is the length of the pipe. This last measurement should be taken in feet.

Subtract the pipe's wall thickness from the pipe's outside diameter. For example, if you had a pipe with a diameter of six inches and a wall thickness of two inches, you would subtract two from six to get four.

Multiply the result of Step 2 by the wall thickness. Using our example, this would give us four x two or eight.

Multiply the result of Step 3 by 10.68. Using our example, this would give us eight x 10.68 or 85.44.

Multiply the result of Step 4 by the length of the pipe. Using our example and assuming that we have a pipe 10 feet long, this final step would result in the calculation 10 x 85.44 or 388kg. The product of this step is the weight of the pipe expressed in pounds.

#### Tips and warnings

• The general formula for calculating the weight of one foot of steel pipe is: w =10.68 (d - t) t
• where w = weight, d = outside diameter, and t = wall thickness. Multiplying this result by the length of the piece of steel pipe gives you the overall weight of the pipe in question.
