How to Make a Board Game in Java
Simple games are easy to write in Java. (3d tic tac toe game board image by Brent Walker from

Anybody that has ever played a video game has said, "I like this, but I would have done it THIS way." As basic computer skills become more common and programming becomes easier, it is simpler than ever to create your own game. Many smaller or web-based programs are written in Java, a basic programming language. For new programmers, Java is often a good place to start their experiments.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Familiarise yourself with the Java language. You can find Java programming books in most bookstores or use online tutorials (see References).

  2. 2

Download the Java Software Developer Kit (SDK) from Sun and a Java Integrated Development Environment (IDE), such as NetBeans or Eclipse (see References).

  3. 3

Come up with a detailed design and rule set. The clearer your idea, the easier it will be to program.

  4. 4

Create any graphics you may need, like a board or pieces, in your favourite graphic design program.

  5. 5

    Write and debug your program.
