The announcement of a new baby's impending arrival often sends crowds of crafters to their hooks and needles, making gifts for the new little person. Beginning crocheters don't have to be left out of the fun. Instead of worrying about crocheting in the round and shaping pattern pieces, make tiny bootees that are worked flat. One small sewing trick will turn a straight swatch of double crochet stitches into a soft baby booty, ready for the new arrival.

Instructions

  1. 1

Make a slip knot in the end of the yarn, insert hook, and chain 17. Double crochet in the second chain from the hook and in every chain after that. You will have made 16 double crochet stitches.

  2. 2

Chain 2 and then turn. Double crochet in the base of the turning chain, making it look as if there are 2 stitches coming out of the first double crochet stitch. Double crochet in every stitch after this. You will have made a row with 17 stitches.

  3. 3

Turn. (Do not make a turning chain as you normally would.) Slip stitch in the first three stitches. Chain 2. Double crochet in the next 11 stitches. Do not work the last three stitches. You will have made a row with 11 stitches.

  4. 4

Chain 2 and turn. Double crochet in the base of the turning chain. Double crochet in each stitch until the end of the row. You will have 30 cm (12 stitches). Tie off the yarn and clip it, leaving a tail of about 30 cm (12 stitches). This last row that you have crocheted will be the top of the cuff.

  5. 5

Lay the piece on a table with the last row at the top of the piece. Fold the right half over onto the left half. Use the tapestry needle and the long tail of yarn to sew together the front of the booty, which is on the left side of the work. You will sew from the top of the cuff, down the cuff and around and down the front of the booty toe. Continue on across the bottom until you reach the heel of the booty. Tie this end securely and clip any remaining tail.

  6. 6

Turn the booty right side out and turn down the cuff. Make a second booty just like the first one.
