How to wash new towels

Updated November 21, 2016

Washing new towels before you use them can help to soften the material and remove that unpleasant plastic packaging smell. Wash new towels in your washing machine at home and then hang them outside on a sunny day to dry naturally.

Remove any packaging, wrapping or tags from the new towels.

Set the controls on a washing machine to cold or warm water. Use warm water that is no more than 16C and, if unsure of the temperature, use cold water.

Add the new white or colour towels to the drum and close the door. Avoid mixing white and colour towels. Make any further adjustments, based on the particular type of machine, to begin the wash cycle. Use no washing powder for the first wash cycle.

Adjust the load size and start the washing machine. Allow the wash cycle to completely finish running.

Leave the towels in the washing machine and fill with water once again. Add washing powder and fabric softener, based on personal preference. Allow the washing machine to completely finish before removing and drying.
