How to Build a Basketball Hoop

Updated February 21, 2017

Basketball is a great activity for the whole family and easy enough for everyone to partake. Having a basketball hoop and pole professionally installed can cost more than £65 for the labour alone. You can easily install a basketball backboard above your garage or on the side of your home with a few tools and the proper techniques.

Measure 2 inches from the base of the 72-by-42-by-1 inch piece of plywood. Center the basketball hoop at 36 inches (the centre of the basketball hoop backboard width of 72 inches).

Screw in the basketball hoop with the screws that came with the 18-inch basketball hoop you purchased from a local sports store.

Carry the backboard up the ladder. Have a friend measure 10 feet from the ground to the base of the backboard. Use the level to make sure the hoop is level.

Screw the corners of the backboard to the peak of the garage or side of your home.

Wear protective eyewear and gloves.
