Before you begin each mowing season, take the time to tune up your lawnmower engine. You will need a few supplies to properly tune up your Honda lawnmower, but the preventive maintenance is well worth it as it will prevent major breakdowns in the future.

Instructions

  1. 1

Pull the spark plug cap off the spark plug on the front of the engine. Fit the correct size deep socket on the spark plug, and unscrew it counterclockwise.

  2. 2

Apply anti-seize lube to the threads of the new spark plug. Screw the new spark plug into the front of the engine. Don't screw it in too tightly or you will strip the engine block's threads. Tighten the spark plug until it is just snug with the socket wrench but can't be loosened by hand. Push the spark plug cap back on the top of the spark plug.

  3. 3

Unscrew the bolt holding the air filter cover over the air filter on the side of the Honda engine. Pull out the old, dirty air filter, and replace it with a new one. Screw the cover back over the air filter.

  4. 4

Lean the mower on its side. Unscrew the oil drain plug with the proper size wrench. Set the mower back down flat over an oil drain pan. Allow all the old oil to drain out.

  5. 5

Tip the mower back on its side. Screw the oil drain plug back in tightly.

  6. 6

File the mower blade. While the mower is on its side, run the steel filer over the blade edge at an angle to file away any rough spots on the blade and sharpen it. Hold the file at a 45-degree angle along the edges of the blade.

  7. 7

Set the mower back down flat. Unscrew the oil cap. Add 5W-30 oil to the lawnmower until it is to the full line on the oil dipstick.

  8. 8

Fill the mower full of gas. Pour the mower fuel system cleaner into the gas tank. Add the specified amount as stated on the bottle.
