How to Use a Rotring Rapidograph

Updated February 21, 2017

The rapidograph precision ink pen from Rotring is a favoured tool among artists and architects, who rely on thin, crisp lines for their drawings. The rapidograph's precision is due to its thin metal drawing point, which can be from 0.1 to 2.0mm wide. These pens use a refillable capillary cartridge system that is easily installed by unscrewing the pen and inserting the cartridge.

Remove the rapidograph pen from its packaging and screw off the cap and sleeve.

Insert the drawing point (thin metal drawing tip) into the shaft of the pen and press downward until the capillary cartridge opens.

Screw on the white sleeve cap over the drawing point until there is no gap visible between the shaft and the sleeve.

Shake the pen to move ink toward the tip and test it on a piece of paper. Make sure to put the cap back on after every use.
