Baseball caps come in two varieties: one-size-fits-all caps that adjust at the back to accommodate a variety of head sizes, or fitted caps that must be sized just as you would size any other piece of clothing. But you can't translate your shirt or trousers size into a hat size. Instead, you must measure your head then use a sizing chart to convert the head measurement into your fitted cap size.

Things you need

  • Flexible tape measure

  1. 1

Stand in front of a mirror.

  2. 2

Wrap the flexible tape measure around your head about 1/2 inch above your eyebrows. This is where the band of the hat will sit. Use your reflection in the mirror to make sure that the tape measure is flat and level as it wraps around your head.

  3. 3

Read the measurement off the measuring tape. Make sure you're reading the inches side of the measuring tape.

  4. 4

Consult a sizing chart (see Resources) to convert your head measurement to a hat size.

Tips and warnings

  • If you don't have access to a flexible tape measure, you can either purchase one very inexpensively in the sewing section of a craft supply store or wrap a string around your head as if it were a tape measure, then measure the string against a ruler or yardstick.
