How to Remove a Glass Cover on a Light

Updated February 21, 2017

When changing a light bulb, you often need to remove a glass covering over the light fixture. The light fixture helps dilute the strong light of the bulb and also hides the look of the naked light. However, these light fixtures do not just pull off, so if you need to change a light bulb in your ceiling you more than likely need to take down the fixture.

Position a step stool or small ladder under the glass cover (unless you are extremely tall or have a rather low ceiling). You want to touch the ceiling with both hands without stretching or hurting yourself.

Turn off the light bulb you want to remove. If the bulb just burnt out you may want to wear gloves because the bulb can be hot.

Position one hand under the light fixture to give support, then look around the fixture for small tightening screws. Usually there are three or four screws.

Unscrew the tightening screws one at a time until the glass cover pulls out. Take both hands to grasp the cover, then step off of the stool and put the cover on a table or chair.

Remove the old bulb and insert the new one. Place the glass cover back over the light and tighten all the screws until the glass cover stays in place.
