Everyone has seen the commercial on television for Italian-style pizzones at various pizza chains. What if you could make them at home? It's very easy to make a homemade pizzone, and they are delicious. The best thing about making your own pizzone is that you know exactly what is in it.
- Skill level:
Things you need
- 1 lb. ground beef or ground Italian sausage
- 1 package white frozen bread dough
- 1 package presliced mozzarella cheese
- 1 small onion
- 1 small green bell pepper
- 1 14 oz. can tomato sauce
- 1 tsp. garlic flakes
- 1 tsp. crushed oregano
- 1 egg, beaten
Thaw bread dough on a cookie sheet and put them in a warm place to rise. In about 3 to 5 hours they should be ready. You can also use homemade bread dough if you have a bread maker.
Cook hamburger meat with chopped onion and green pepper. After you drain the fat, place the mixture in the skillet and add the tomato sauce, garlic flakes and oregano. Cook for 15 minutes on medium-low and set aside to slightly cool.
Flatten and stretch the bread dough. Spread the meat-mixture in the center, along the length of the dough. Add any pizza toppings you like. Top with mozzarella slices and bring the sides up to form a "U" shape and seal.
After the pizzone has been sealed, cut three slits horizontally on the top and brush with the beaten egg so it will brown.
Preheat oven to 325 degrees and cook for 20 to 25 minutes. The pizzone serves 4 to 6 adults.
