How Do I Design a Fake Death Certificate for Halloween?

Updated February 21, 2017

The best Halloween costumes feature convincing props. If you plan to portray a dead or mythical person for the holiday, you can create a faux death certificate to accompany your look. You'll only need a few supplies and a convincing, fun cause of death to fool your colleagues into believing that you have died.

Purchase a blank formal certificate from a craft or office supply store. Although certified certificates of death are not printed on such paper, the formal certificate will add to the effect of your costume. You also have the option of customising and printing such a certificate online, which will save you a trip to the store.

Use the calligraphy marker to add any necessary information to the death certificate. You can include the person's name, nickname, birth date, place of death and a fun cause of death such as "chocolate overdose."

Dip a tea bag into a bowl of cool water and then squeeze out any excess drops. Wipe the tea bag across the certificate to create an antique or aged look. It is important to let the marker dry before you perform the tea bag stain, so as to avoid smearing.

Things You'll Need

  • Blank formal certificate
  • Black calligraphy marker
  • Tea bag
  • Bowl of water
