America Online is a content provider that has propriety software you install on your machine to access the company network. You can still use an AOL e-mail address on the web for free, but using the content provider's network costs money. If you want to save money and cancel your account, AOL requires you to send an e-mail from the billing area of your account, or you can send a signed letter by fax.
