Door frames, also known as door jambs, can become weakened and warped by slamming the door too often, leaks that rot the wood or age. A door frame can also be broken or split if someone forces entry by kicking in the door. Whether you are looking to fix a broken door frame or reinforce it to prevent forced entry, a door frame repair kit is a quick solution. A door frame repair kit can even be used if the door frame is broken in several places.

  1. 1

Gently remove any caulking from the casing joint and weather stripping with a putty knife.

  2. 2

Replace broken pieces of the door frame. Nail them in place with finishing nails. Make sure the broken frame is as complete and tight as possible.

  3. 3

Use a drill to unscrew and remove the door hardware.

  4. 4

Line up the replacement door frame with the holes of the latch and deadbolt.

  5. 5

Screw in the replacement using 2 1/2-inch screws or the screws that come with the kit. Start with the middle section of the replacement and make sure the replacement holes line up with the latch and deadbolt holes. Finish screwing in all of the screws.

  6. 6

Test the door by closing and locking it.

  7. 7

Caulk the door as necessary. Repaint the trim if it has been damaged.

  • When nailing the existing door frame back together, make sure the nails will not interfere with the installation of your door frame replacement.
  • Do not tighten the screws excessively or you risk warping the door frame.
  • Take proper safety precautions when working with power tools.
