Landscaping can be a fun, relaxing way to pass your time, and the end result not only adds beauty to your home but value to property as well. One of the easiest ways to enhance your landscape is by adding stone work, and one of the best ways to use stone is by making steps and walkways. Stone can add simple elegance or rustic charm to your landscape, and doing it yourself is not difficult. You can give your home a whole new appearance by building stone steps leading to your front door.
Things you need
Choose the type of stone you want for your steps with and determine the design. You might use even, manufactured stone or broken, odds and ends pieces to create a more natural appearance. You can purchase stone or use what you can find at the side of the road. If you have a nearby rock quarry, you often can purchase larger quantities of stone for a decent price.
Measure width and length of your stone step pathway and mark it off with wooden stakes.
Dig the pathway for your stone steps, gradating the steps. Check the measurements as you go to ensure accuracy. When the steps have been roughed out, use a hoe to level them.
Start at the top and place the stones on each step. Use smaller, broken scraps to fill in any gaps. Press each stone into the dirt or tap it into place with a rubber mallet to ensure firm seating.
Mix together a batch of cement. You can purchase ready mix cement at a hardware store. Pour the cement between the cracks to secure the stones in place. Add plants, flowers, or shrubbery along both sides of your stone stair walkway to enhance the natural beauty of the stone.
