Exercises to Reduce Nasal Tip Swelling After Rhinoplasty

Updated April 17, 2017

Facial surgeries are gaining popularity and rhinoplasty remains among the top contenders. By reshaping the nose in slight or dramatic ways, it can bring balance to the face and create a more aesthetically pleasing effect for the patient. However, it is important to know that as with all surgeries, there are certain things that cannot be avoided, such as swelling. Although it is extremely important to be delicate with the area that has just been operated on, there are some techniques that can be used to reduce nasal tip swelling after rhinoplasty.

Massage

Before beginning any type of facial exercises on your own it is important to consult with your doctor as to when the best time to begin this process is. Initially after surgery, you'll want to keep your head elevated at all times, even when sleeping, in order to reduce the amount of swelling around your eyes and nose. Once you have followed all proper instructions from your doctor and still notice excessive swelling, a gentle massage can break up any scarring that may be taking place inside the nasal cavity and reduce the swelling. The basic technique of this massage is to take you thumb and index fingers and gently massage the areas that are swollen, focusing on the nostrils and tip. Be extremely gentle and repeat daily, according to your doctor's specific instructions. You will be doing a basic version of a pinching motion and gently flaring your nostrils against your fingers. Massage has long been known for its healing effects, particularly on breaking up scar tissue which may be the reason for the swelling of the nasal tip.

Other Treatments

If you feel that you have followed doctor's orders to the very last detail and have tried the massage exercises in order to reduce the amount of nasal swelling after your rhinoplasty, there are steps you can take that are not very extreme but will alter the results of a rhinoplasty slightly. This can be done two ways. One less invasive technique is the use of steroid injections to the tip of the nose, where the swelling is occurring. While steroid injections are usually the best way to go to take down the swelling soon after the procedure, there is always the option of an additional surgery to get rid of the scar tissue and reshape the nose. It is not uncommon to have to go back to the doctor alter a rhinoplasty if you feel a revision might be necessary.
