Skype is a free online VoIP site that allows users to contact each other via instant message chatting or by talking on a microphone and webcam. If both people have the program installed, then the voice phone service is free. Chatting on Skype is just like any other online chat service. It is easy to use and allows friends to chat free of charge.

Go to the Skype website and download Skype. Install the application onto your computer and create a unique username.
Load Skype. Click "Contacts" in the user window. Click "Add contacts" under the contacts tab to find friends available for an online chat.
Right-click on a username and select "Send IM." Clicking on the username and then selecting the blue dialogue icon will do the same task.
Type in your message on the bottom of the chat window and press enter to send.
Exit out of the chat by closing the window.
