There are many solutions to solve the problem of a dry and flaky scalp, including natural home remedies using items that you may already have on hand in your pantry, as well as over-the-counter preparations.

  1. 1

Cleanse your scalp with ½ cup apple cider vinegar mixed with ¼ cup of water and a teaspoon of clear honey. Add 2 drops of lavender essential oil to soothe and moisturise your scalp. The apple cider vinegar cleans residue build-up from your scalp, while the honey soothes and softens dry flaky patches to prevent itching. Leave the mixture on for 1 hour and wash off with warm water. Repeat twice a week to prevent dry flaking of your scalp.

  2. 2

Boil 2 cups of water with 2 tbsp of chamomile flowers. Leave the brew to steep for 30 minutes. Drain off the liquid and add 3 drops of lavender essential oil. After rinsing off the shampoo with clear running water, use the resulting liquid as a final rinse for your hair.

  3. 3

Mix ½ cup of whole milk, ¼ cup of clear honey and 2 tbsp of extra virgin olive oil. Massage the resulting concoction into your hair and leave on for 2 hours or more to give the ingredients a chance to work on your dry and flaky scalp. Milk works as soothing relief for the scalp, and contains vitamin D for scalp and hair health. Honey is a moisturising and softening factor in this remedy; the extra virgin olive oil softens and penetrates deeply into the scalp to alleviate dry, flaky patches. Use this remedy as often as required.

  4. 4

Apply aloe vera gel to your scalp, leaving it on for as long as possible before washing it off. Aloe vera gel was first used by ancient civilisations thousands of years ago for its rejuvenating, hydrating and moisturising properties. When aloe is used on the scalp, it returns the natural balance of oils to the scalp and hair follicles. Use aloe vera gel as needed.
