How to use a Halti harness
Say goodbye to being pulled on the street every day. (dog walker image by robert mobley from

The Halti harness is a valuable training tool developed by animal behaviourist Dr. Roger Mugford. The harness is designed for use on dogs that have a tendency to pull on the lead. Because the lead attaches to the front, it steers the dog from the chest, which ultimately provides dog owners with more control. Every time the dog pulls on the lead, the harness will cause the dog to be gently guided back towards the owner, naturally discouraging pulling behaviours. As with any training tool, dog owners must learn how to use the Halti harness to get the most benefit from it.

  1. 1

Ensure you buy the correct size harness for your dog. Halti harnesses generally come in small, medium and large sizes, with lists of dog breeds for each size on the package.

  2. 2

Place the harness over the dog's head and clip the straps around the belly together. Attach the harness clip to your dog's normal collar.

  3. 3

Adjust the main strap around the girth and ensure it is snug but not too tight. Adjust the front sections as well so the clip remains in a central position. Two fingers should be able to fit under the straps.

  4. 4

Allow your dog some time to adjust to the feeling of the harness. Some dogs may take a while to get used to it, whereas others may seem to be comfortable right away.

  5. 5

Attach the lead to the front ring of the Halti harness. Now you and your dog are ready to go out for a walk. With time, the dog will learn to stop pulling thanks to the way this special harness is built.

Tips and warnings

  • It is best if you use a double-ended lead, so you can attach the lead to both the chest and shoulder rings. This provides good control of the dog's shoulders.
  • Give your dog a treat and praise every time you put the harness on it.
  • Don't leave the Halti harness on when the dog is left unattended.
  • Once taken off, keep the Halti harness away from your dog, especially if it has a tendency to chew.
