How to Draw Flowers & Leaves Coming Out of a Vase

Flowers and leaves in a vase is a beautiful sight to behold. How exciting it might be to learn to draw flowers and leaves in a pretty clear vase. What might seem intricate and complicated is really only a series of steps that build on each other to create the finished drawing. Once the technique is learnt the budding artist will be able to create lovely natural drawings.

Flowers and Leaves in Vase (Kathy Hatter)

  • 1 / 7

Draw one large ellipse and two smaller ellipses for the bottom and top of the vase. Draw these in light pencil marks so that they can be partially erased later.

  • 2 / 7

Fill in the shape of the flowers above the vase with circles. Draw these lightly as well because these circles are only to create the shape of the floral arrangement.

  • 3 / 7

Add the leaf shapes in various places around the spots where the flowers will be.

  • 4 / 7

Begin to fill in the flowers over the lightly drawn circles. Draw them darker and vary the shapes of the petals to create several different kinds of flowers in the vase. In this example, there are flowers with petals like daisies and also flowers with trumpet-shaped petals. Add flowers in each place there is a lightly drawn circle.

  • 5 / 7

Fill in the colours of the flowers and erase any circles that are still visible.

  • 6 / 7

Add fill colour to the leaves and draw the straight stems extending down the centre of the vase.

  • 7 / 7

Draw blue water in the vase around the stems.
