  1. 1

Position the Passat on a flat surface. Use a jack to raise the vehicle off the ground and safely support it with jack stands. Follow the manufacturer's suggestions on using the jack and stands properly.

  2. 2

Drain the engine oil from the Passat. The oil pan is located under the vehicle, between the tires at the bottom of the engine block. Look for a rectangular shaped pan then place an oil drip pan under it. Use a wrench to disconnect the oil drain plug from the back of the oil pan, allowing the oil to drain properly.

  3. 3

Use a wrench to disconnect each of the oil pan bolts located around the outside edge of the oil pan. The bolts must have removal in a crisscross fashion; remove a bolt from one side of the oil pan, then remove a bolt from the other side until removal of all bolts is complete.

  4. 4

Support the oil pan with one hand while removing the bolts. The oil pan will drop off once bolts are off. The gasket for the oil pan will also come off with the oil pan. Replace the gasket prior to reinstalling the oil pan.
