Research studies show an increasingly clear link between serotonin levels in the body and pain perception. Serotonin also affects sleep patterns and chronically sleep-deprived people experience higher rates of depression and pain. While some doctors prescribe antidepressants for patients suffering from fibromyalgia, a rheumatological disorder characterised by unexplained pain in the soft tissue (muscles, tendons), others use techniques that do not reply on prescription drugs. 5-HTP is a precursor to serotonin. When the patient takes 5-HTP, the body converts the supplement into serotonin on its own. The body then gets the serotonin it needs, without experiencing the side effects of prescription drugs.
