Homemade hair conditioner is cheap, convenient, effective and environmentally responsible. Some of the more popular ingredients can make a decent salad dressing as well. Select a home hair conditioner based on your hair type and the amount of time you have available for conditioning. Although there isn't much scientific evidence proving the effectiveness of these treatments, they are made from common, safe household ingredients and many women have found them to work well.

    Replacing Oils for Dry Hair

  1. 1

Wash your hair before deep conditioning and apply the conditioner to wet hair.

  2. 2

Use an oil-based conditioner for dry hair. Any vegetable oil will work. For extra hair nourishment and a nice scent, add a few drops of essential oils such as lavender, rose or sandalwood. The vegetable oil replaces the natural hair oils lacking in dry hair.

  3. 3

Heat the oil on a hob until it is warm but not hot, and massage it gently into your hair.

  4. 4

Wrap a towel around your hair and let the oil soak in for several hours before you wash it out. Make sure to use an old towel as many of these ingredients may cause stains.

    Oily Hair

  1. 1

Avoid pure oil conditioners if your hair is very oily. Instead, massage non-oily conditioners through wet hair and let them soak in for at least 30 minutes.

  2. 2

Use beaten eggs or mayonnaise to nourish oily hair with extra protein. Mashed avocado also softens hair. Beat or mash them until they are of a texture easy to apply to your hair. Allow 1/2 cup of conditioner for short hair and 1 cup for longer hair, and leave on for at least 30 minutes.

  3. 3

Reduce oiliness by conditioning your hair with vinegar or beer. Apply enough to saturate your hair, namely 1/2 cup for short hair or 1 cup for long hair. Leave on for at least 30 minutes.

Tips and warnings

  • Put on conditioner before you go to bed. Wrap one towel around your head and drape another towel over your pillow for an extra-long deep condition.
  • Shampoo your hair thoroughly after deep conditioning.
