PowerPoint presentations have a way of growing to unmanageable size. Images tend to be the worst about taking up unnecessary file space. Follow these simple steps to compress the images in your next PowerPoint presentation. The steps work for PowerPoint 2002 to the current version.

Don't use any photo images larger than 1024 x 768 pixels as you create your presentation. Anything larger than that is likely to be off the screen anyway. The same is true of any graphic images you use.
Save a copy of the completed presentation before you make any changes to image resolution. This should be standard procedure for all projects.
Choose any image in the presentation. Right click it. You now have a shortcut menu on your screen. Choose "Format Picture." Pick the "Picture" tab in the "Format" dialog box. Select "Compress."
Select "Apply To." Now you have a choice. Choose "Selected Picture" or "All Pictures in Document" to complete the compression of all images in one step.
Set the resolution. While in the "Format Picture" dialog mode, click "Web/Screen" if your PowerPoint presentation is for a screen show. If you plan to distribute the PowerPoint presentation as printed pages, select "Print."
Delete cropped areas of photos. While still in the "Format Picture" dialog box, choose the "Compress Pictures" as well as "Delete Cropped Areas of Pictures" check boxes.
Click "OK." The screen may prompt you to "Apply" in the "Compress Pictures" dialog box as well. Your PowerPoint should now be a more manageable size. Check to see that the images are still clear and crisp and as you want them. If the images are all good, you should save your work with a new file name.
